Is pain an actual sign of getting older?

Just like peanut butter and jelly, we think that getting older and being in pain go hand in hand; I am here to squash this idea. This mindset often leads to patients not seeking out care because they've relegated to the notion that "well, I'm old, so I'm suppose to hurt!".

We are not meant to "slow-down" or "take it easy" as we age. However as we get older, our bodies do slow down. There is a key distinction between these two statements though. When we think we need to slow down or take it easy, we may be overcorrecting and preventing our body from moving to it's fullest capacity. After years of "taking it easy" our bodies are far less equipped to handle the riggers and requirements of movement. We should be letting our bodies dictate what sorts of movements we should or shouldn't be doing. For example: imagine raking leaves for four hours and later that evening you are in pain, it is possible you did too much. I say possible because 4 hours of raking, using the form and posture you used, was too much; what if you raked using a different form? Just like using proper form and technique at the gym to avoid pain and injury, there is literally proper form and technique for just about anything that you do, even getting out of a chair! We should not be avoiding movements until we've made absolutely certain we're doing those activities correctly.

Our bodies are like a marble, put a marble on the countertop and that puppy is going to roll; simply put, we are meant to move! Give the office a call if you are interested in getting up and getting moving again!
