Fish oil doesn't affect heart disease? Something smells fishy.

We've all heard fish oils (Omega 3 fatty acids) may or may not improve heart health.

A study released from the NEJM concluded that Omega 3s did not reduce your risk of a heart attack.

In the study, this was true as the same number of people had heart attacks regardless if they took fish oils.

However: There was a major finding from that study which was completely overlooked. The individuals who supplemented with fish oils had a 40% reduction in mortality.

What does that mean? That means of the people who took fish oil, 40% fewer died as a result. So even though ingesting fish oils may not prevent someone from having a heart attack, according to this study, those people who did had significantly smaller heart attack.

As with anything, quality and quantity are important aspects regarding how effective a fish oil is going to be so be wary before going to purchase a $20 bottle from the nearby box-store.
