Are we meant to breathe through our mouths or our noses? The answer really is quite simple; our NOSE!
There's simply too many structures located in the nasal cavity which help to cleanse, warm, and moisten the air, things which are not present in the mouth. Not to mention that breathing through our nose has shown to increase memory formation and recollection! In addition to that, air has a much easier time getting from our nose to our trachea (wind-pipe) when compared to our mouths. People often like to discuss differences in individuals and how things are suppose to be done; for example whether to heel-strike or mid-foot strike while running or whether to turn the feet outwards or keep them forward while squatting. Though there is a correct answer to the above two questions (I won't digress I promise!) there is room for debate. When it comes to breathing; through the nose takes the cake.
Proper breathing increases oxygenation to the tissues of the body helping to reduce pain, anxiety and muscle tension! Do you have trouble breathing through your nose? There are things which can be done to help so if you do, give the office a call!
