Breathing is the most important aspect of our health that we have direct control of. We can consciously determine how fast and how deeply we breathe even though most of us never actually think about it. But what if I told you that many of the problems, such as low back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, digestive issues, bladder dysfunction and circulation issues are all impacted by how we breathe.
The reason: Breathing allows our body to build pressure and this pressure promotes anything from core stability to intestinal movement to blood flow.
We take nearly 25,000 breaths every single day and there is a specific way we want to breathe. We have become a society of chest and neck breathers as opposed to belly breathers. Stress levels, tight fitting clothes and the amount we sit have driven us away from proper breathing motions. Improper breathing patterns not only lead to muscle tension, headaches, neck and back pain but it also reduces the amount of air we breathe by as much as 20%. The very reason oxygen is so important is because it gets plugged into the chemical equation leading to energy production. So not only can it lead to pain and muscle imbalances but it also leads to your body producing significantly less energy. It is the same reason why those with untreated sleep apnea feel exhausted after having slept all night; but that's another post!
So if you'd like to have your breathing patterns assessed, give the office a call!
